What is cupping therapy?

Cupping therapy is an ancient form of alternative medicine in which a therapist applies special suction cups to your skin for 15-20 minutes to create suction. Cupping therapy is useful for many purposes including pain relief, reducing inflammation, increasing blood flow, relaxation, general well-being, and as a form of deep-tissue massage.

Cupping therapy might be considered a trend now, but it is not new. Cupping therapy is a Chinese medicine technique dating back thousands of years. However, recently, media coverage of Hollywood elite and Olympic athletes have sparked renewed interested in this treatment.

How is cupping performed?

During cupping, your therapist will apply either heat or suction to create a vacuum to gently draw the skin in the target area upward into the cup. The cup stays in place for 5 to 20 minutes. Cupping therapy can also remove harmful substances and toxins from the body to promote healing, and help treat pain, deep scar tissues in the muscles and connective tissue, muscle knots, and swelling.

The cups used for this therapeutic procedure may be made of glass, bamboo, earthenware, or silicone.
